Most of Troy uses the 12180 ZIP code. So does part of the Town of Brunswick along Hoosick Road and Brunswick Road. The north end of the city, Lansingburgh, uses 12182, and we still take calls there.

How Troy Is Laid Out

Troy runs along the east bank of the Hudson River, about 50 feet above sea level at the water and rising to about 500 feet on the east side. The oldest blocks are down by the river in Downtown, Washington Park and Little Italy. South Troy stretches toward the Wynants Kill and North Greenbush. The Eastside and Mount Ida climb the hill behind downtown, and Albia sits at the southeast corner. RPI and Beman Park are on the hill to the northeast, with Sycaway and Frear Park beyond. Brunswick borders the city to the east and North Greenbush to the south.

The city is known as the Collar City. The detachable shirt collar started here in the 1820s, and in the early 1900s Troy made most of the collars sold in America.

Old Houses and Newer Ones

Downtown, South Troy and the Eastside are mostly houses from before 1940, many of them two- and three-families. Sycaway and parts of Albia add houses from the 1940s through the 1970s. East of Frear Park and out in Brunswick, the homes get newer still. Each has its own mix of boilers, furnaces, heat pumps and cooling setups, which is why each neighborhood has its own page.
